BABEL: An exhibition by Marco Toso Borella at the Murano Glass Museum

The lack of communication in the era of social media and AI told through the ancient art of sgraffito on gold leaf. From June 12, 2026, to March 30, 2027

The inability to communicate in a world of hyper-communication takes shape in the works of Marco Toso Borella, a versatile Murano Glass artist, in a solo exhibition titled BABEL to be held at the Murano Glass Museum from June 12, 2026, to March 30, 2027.

The exhibition, promoted by the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, consists of about twenty new works by the Master who, in continuity with and through the contemporary evolution of his family’s centuries-old tradition, is recognized as one of the world’s leading exponents of the ancient artistic technique of sgraffito on gold leaf.

In an era dominated by digital hyper-communication, the Artist explores the paradox of incommunicability. His works become a metaphysical battlefield where 21st-century conflicts—from artificial intelligence to social media alienation—clash with archetypal figures. New mythological monsters that demand the courage of modern Don Quixotes, Dantes, and Ulysses aboard a hope embodied in a new Noah’s Ark, which becomes a message in a bottle, a vox clamantis in deserto.

The dreamlike world of Marco Toso Borella emerges from the layered depth of his metaphysical subjects to offer visitors an immersive experience in a piece of Venetian history: the rediscovery of an ancient artistic technique once destined for oblivion, yet still capable of engaging with today’s world and its conflicts.

An ancient language attempting to reconstruct that tower of identity built over centuries on the island of Murano.
