The Church of Santa Maria del Pianto is a small gem of the Lagoon, a church that remained closed and inaccessible to the public for over 60 years and which today, thanks to the efforts of the Fondazione Museo della Scuola Grande di San Marco e della Sanità, will undergo a major restoration project and be returned to the citizens. To celebrate this “rediscovery,” Vocal Skyline will hold an immersive concert inside on Saturday, March 28 at 6 PM (FULLY BOOKED!).
The Church stands within the complex of the Santi Giovanni e Paolo Civil Hospital in Venice, the only place of worship in the city facing the North Lagoon, from the Fondamente Nove opposite the Island of San Michele. An octagonal church designed by Francesco Contin from Ticino, inspired by the Basilica della Madonna della Salute, it expresses in its physical forms and in the reference to the Christian numerology of the number 8—the eighth day of creation, dedicated to purification—the memory of salvation from the plague of 1630. It is the only place of worship erected by the State for a political vow: the protection of the Republic in the conflict with the Turks for dominance over Candia.
